Kochi: Despite declining cases of coronavirus in many states of the Country, The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Sunday asked the state government of Kerala to withdraw its decision to ease COVID-19 restrictions ahead of Bakrid.

According to the IMA, ease in Covid-19 restrictions ahead of Bakrid in Kerala is “unwarranted and inappropriate” at a time of a medical emergency.

The IMA further said that it would knock the doors of the Supreme Court if the Kerala government does not enforce Covid-appropriate behavior to curtail the rising menace of the viral disease by withdrawing this decision.

Many northern states have stopped traditional and popular pilgrimage yatras because of the Pandemic. Unfortunately, Kerala took a decision that will pave the way for mass gatherings, IMA said in its statement.

In the larger interest of the country and the well-being of humanity, the Kerala government should take some major steps.

Pinarayi Vijayan – The Chief Minister of Kerala on Saturday said that “In view of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Azha) being celebrated on July 21 in the state, textiles, footwear shops, jewelry, fancy stores, shops selling home appliances and electronic items, all types of repairing shops and shops selling essential items shall be allowed to open on July 18, 19 and 20 from 7 am to 8 pm in category A, B, and C areas.

Places of worship can be allowed with a maximum of 40 people on special occasions of celebration, the chief minister said.

The Health Department of Kerala has reported 31.5 lakh cases of the coronavirus so far and claimed more than 15,269 deaths. Around 30.1 lakh people have been successfully recovered after getting infected by the virus.
