The Government may give Four-day a week option to workers

New Delhi: Employees in India may have the option in future to work Four-day a week. The Government of India is likely announce new labour codes in which employers will a authority to decide that which employee will work four days (12 hours a day), five days (10 hours a day) and six days (8 hours a day) a week.

Apurva Chandra – The Union labour secretary on Monday said that “this provision will comprise a work limit of 48 hours per week. The organizations would have three choices – deploying employees for four days at 12 hours per day, five days at around 10 hours per day and six days at eight hours per day.”

On the new labour codes – Chandra said that “The Centre was not forcing employers or employees to comply with the provision adding that this was being brought in to provide flexibility and to be in sync with changing work culture in the country.”

The ministry would soon be in a position to bring into force the four Codes which are Code on Wages, Industrial Relations, Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) and Social Security Codes, Chandra to the media.

The ministry is aiming to implement all the four codes in one go.

The Central government may follow the track of New Zealand to revive the economy post coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern in June last year – suggested a similar option to employers – consider a four-day working week and other flexible working options as a way to boost tourism and help employees address persistent work and life balance issues.

Limited working hours and three days off will reduce the traffic in the cities, Provide customers to hotel–restaurants and other small businesses.
