Over 90 percent covid cases in Kerala are of omicron: Kerala Health Minister
Kochi: Kerala Health Minister on Friday expressed concerns about delta and omicron cases. Health Minister Veena George said that the third wave is fuelled by the Omicron variant and 94 percent of the COVID-19 cases in Kerala are Omicron positive.
“It is now clear that the third wave in Kerala is the Omicron wave. Continuous sequencing of Covid positive samples is being done. Almost 94 percent of samples test positive for Omicron and 6 percent for delta,” Veena George said.
Veena George said that the COVID cases could spike and attain a peak in certain districts. She, however, ruled out the kind of surge witnessed since January 1. “A massive surge, like the spike from 28,000 cases to 48,000, is not in any of the projections that we have done,” said the minister.
She also said that among the COVID-19 cases arriving from neighboring states and abroad, 80 percent were infected with the Omicron variant.
