New Delhi: With less than 50 days remaining for the high-stakes presidential elections in the US, former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, will meet the visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week.

The meeting between the two leaders, unreported until Trump’s announcement at an event on Tuesday in Flint, Michigan, highlights the ongoing political engagements between them, the media reported on Wednesday.

Trump said that he is going to meet with PM Modi who is scheduled to visit the US next week. The Indian Embassy in the US is, however, yet to confirm it.

This weekend, the PM will reach the US, as will his counterparts in Australia (Anthony Albanese) and Japan (Fumio Kishida), for the Summit of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), hosted by President Joe Biden in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

PM Modi will be in the US from September 21 to 23.

At their Summit, the leaders of the four democracies will review the progress achieved by the Quad over the last year and set the agenda for the year ahead to assist the countries of the Indo-Pacific region in meeting their development goals and aspirations.

India will host the next Quad Summit in 2025.

On September 23, PM Modi will address the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which will be attended by several world leaders.

On the sidelines of the Summit, he will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and discuss issues of mutual interest.

In New York, PM Modi will also address a gathering of the Indian community on September 22, and interact with CEOs of leading US-based companies to foster greater collaboration between the two countries in the cutting-edge areas of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, and biotechnology, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

He is also expected to interact with thought leaders and other stakeholders active in the India-US bilateral landscape.

On his part, earlier this year, Trump met with other foreign leaders, including Hungary’s nationalist premier Viktor Orbán, whom he regularly mentions in speeches, and Polish President Andrzej Duda, who once proposed naming a military base in his country “Fort Trump.”
Foreign leaders have argued that meetings with Trump are part of standard encounters they have with opposition figures.
