Poll panel: New CEC Rajiv Kumar to oversee Prez, V-P’s and 2024 Lok Sabha elections
New Delhi: The new Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, will oversee the coming Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections as well as the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar was on Thursday appointed as the next CEC. He will assume charge on May 15, a day after the incumbent Sushil Chandra demits office,
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, who put out the notification appointing Kumar, and a press note on his Twitter handle, conveyed his best wishes to the new CEC.
Born in 1960, Kumar was a 1984-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Bihar/Jharkhand cadre. He superannuated from service in February 2020.
Before his appointment as the EC, he was the chairperson of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). He took charge as an EC on September 1, 2020, against a vacancy created after the resignation of then EC Ashok Lavasa.
As the CEC, Kumar will demit office in February 2025.
Besides the President and the Vice President’s elections, due in the next couple of months, the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and several assembly polls will also be held under his watch.
