New Delhi: In a major victory for the Hindu petitioners, a Varanasi court on Thursday rejected the Muslims’ demand for the removal of the court-appointed Advocate Commissioner for a video survey of the controversial Gyanvapi mosque close to the world-famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

The Hindu petitioners maintained the mosque was built after demolishing Hindu temples and should be surveyed for evidence within the premises.

The court also appointed two additional advocates to assist the Advocate Commissioner, Ajay Mishra.

The Muslim petitioners had sought Mishra’s removal claiming that he was doing the video survey of areas in the Gyanvapi mosque that were not specified in the order.

The court clarified that the video survey will continue and be completed by May 17.

It also directed the authorities to deal sternly with those trying to stall the survey.
