Observing Earth Day with the theme “Invest in Our Planet”

New Delhi, April 22: Every year, World Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, and this year also, the day is observed with the theme of “Invest in our planet.”

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the rapidly rising levels of pollution, climate change, and other factors that contribute to damaging the environment and raising the question of the survival of the planet.

It is celebrated with various activities like tree plantations and awareness programmes while gathering all the people and businesses to work together to build a healthy economy for the planet.

The day is coordinated by earthday.org, which organises various events with different themes for the day, and this year too it had the theme “Invest in our planet.” With the theme over, more than one billion people participate in Earth Day activity, every year to take action in their community.

Now that the situation of the poor environment and the earth is taking a little more notice, it is a critical situation, and many organisations are taking the initiative to protect it. Not only the private sector but also government organisations contribute to making the planet healthier.

The day was marked for the first time around 50 years ago, on April 22, 1970, through the efforts of Senator Gaylord Nelson to promote public awareness over issues about the environment.

He had decided to bring the student and the anti-war movement together with the growing public awareness about air and water pollution. Not only that, he even launched the idea of teaching about environmental protection in college. Gradually, the activity gained a lot of media attention and became successful. Later in 1990, the movement expanded on a global scale.
