New Delhi: As India prepares to host the 18th Summit of the Group of 20 (G-20) on September 9 and 10, the head of the South Asian country’s largest carmaker said on Tuesday the nation has raised the stature of this bloc, the intergovernmental forum of 19 countries and the European Union.
“No other nation has taken the opportunity like India did to showcase its development, raise the country’s profile, and also use the G-20 platform to make a lot of changes and improvements in attitudinal differences in different parts of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Maruti Suzuki India Ltd Chairman R C Bhargava.
Last week, Maruti Suzuki reported its highest-ever August sales of nearly 190,000 units since the company’s inception in 1982, underlining India’s healthy economy.
India has given G-20 a certain recognition of its ability to influence people in the world and the forum will be inspired in the future by what has been done in the democratic country during the bloc’s presidency, Bhargava told a news agency.
At a time when the world is facing several problems both financially and politically such as the Ukraine-Russia war, inflation, global warming, and carbon footprint being everybody’s concern, India has taken the lead in trying to move the different countries towards recognizing how they can deal with these problems, he said.
“I think that opportunity has been strengthened by the fact that compared to most of the countries, including those in the G-20, India has been very stable politically and its economy has done better than any other country.”
Bhargava said, “We have the fastest-growing economy today compared to the US, and China, and all others have been left behind. So, I think that is really where we have even greater credibility in our efforts to influence the world because we are not speaking from a position of weakness.
“We are speaking from a position of some strength, strength caused by the ability to act…because it’s one thing for your own to be in some sort of disarray and then you’re telling everybody else to put things in order. It is another thing when your home is shining and then you tell others these are some of the things you can do,” he added.
