Although India has, for a long time, battled the incidence of cancer, latest estimates peg them to be rising at significantly higher rate. This is generally due to poorer prognosis, because of relatively low cancer awareness, inadequate early detection mechanisms, and the lack of equitable access to affordable curative care. However, cancer is curable, if detected early and treated promptly. To translate this fact into reality, Adani Dahanu Thermal Power Station (ADTPS), Adani Foundation and Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd (AEML) in association with Indian Medical Association (IMA) recently organised Cancer Detection Camp in Dahanu under its CSR initiative. The camp was attended by more than 110 citizens of Dahanu which included 52 women and 58 men.

During this camp, five women were detected with initial symptoms of breast cancer and six men who regularly consumed tobacco were also detected with early symptoms of cancer. Doctors from HCG Hospital, Borivali examined the patients and gave their expert opinion along with guidance about further treatment and course of action.

Such cancer detection camps in action can help in prevention, early detection, and public health education. Timely detection of cancer can go on to save many lives. Unfortunately, at remote places like Dahanu, people do not have access to quality healthcare. Adani’s free cancer detection camp is a step towards bringing in better health interventions to the region and creating a positive difference in the lives of the residents here, where most cannot afford the testing and treatment costs of this deadly disease.
