Uttarakhand: National Highways and Roads closed as rains and landslides create havoc
Ahmedabad – Heavy rainfall in several parts of Uttarakhand has led to the closure of the Rishikesh-Devprayag, Rishikesh-Tehri, and Dehradun-Mussoorie roads.
Several roads in Tehri, Dehradun, and Mussoorie are severely damaged due to heavy rainfall and landslides. Several bridges and roads collapsed in Dehradun in the past week due to continuous rains.
The heavy traffic on the Chamba-Mussoorie road pointed at the negligence of the BRO and the road construction quality.
Besides, National Highways 58 and 94 came to a standstill due to frequent landslides. Accumulation of debris near the Totaghati-Shivpura stretch led to the closing of NH-58.
Meanwhile, people were forced to cross the road with the help of hills and footpaths on NH-94 after rains washed out a large portion of the stretch leading to Phatkot. Cracks have been developed on the adjacent road, causing roads to break and uproot.
On the other hand, people risked their lives by crossing muddy hills and slippery terrain on the Rishikesh-Chamba route on NH-94.
However, the administration closed the highways and instructed passengers to refrain from unnecessary travel. “The traffic on NH-58 and NH-94 has stopped keeping the security of citizens in mind,” DM Eva Ashish Srivastava said.
