NEW DELHI: Indore, the historic city in Madhya Pradesh has once again bagged the country’s “cleanest city” tag as the results of the “Swachh Survekshan 2020” announced on Thursday. It was the fourth consecutive time out of the five such annual cleanliness survey reports that Indore has remained on the first spot.

Gujarat’s Surat bagged the second spot and Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai was placed third in the fifth edition of the survey.

Announcing the results, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, “Heartiest congratulations! Indore is India’s cleanest city 4th year in a row. The city & its people have shown exemplary dedication towards cleanliness. Congratulations to MP CM @ChouhanShivraj people, political leadership & Municipal Corporation for this superlative performance,”

The Union Minister also congratulated Jalandhar Cantt for being India’s cleanest cantonment in Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2020.

The ancient holy town of Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of the prime minister Narendra Modi, “is rightfully the cleanest town on the banks of river Ganga,” the Minister said in another tweet. “Heartiest congratulations to PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, who represents the city in Lok Sabha, for his visionary leadership which has inspired the people of the town for this achievement,” the Minister tweeted.

In the category of population of less than 1 lakh, Maharashtra’s Karad bagged the first position, followed by state’s Saswad and Lonavala.

Meanwhile, best performing states in terms of overall performance were divided in two categories- states with over 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and states with less than 100 ULBs. In the first category, Chhattisgarh bagged the award for the second time and Jharkhand won the award in the second category.

Best city in terms of maximum citizen’s participation award in the category of population of over one lakh has been given to Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur. In the same category for cities with population of less than one lakh, the award was bagged by Uttarakhand’s Nandaprayag.

‘Cleanest city with over 40 lakh population’ award was won by Ahmedabad and Vijayawada won in the category of city with population between 10 lakh to 40 lakh. ‘Fastest mover big city’ award was won by Rajasthan’s Jodhpur.

Gujarat’s Rajkot won the best self-sustainable city award. In the category of 3 to 10 lakh population, cleanest city award went to Karnataka’s Mysuru. Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad won ‘Fastest mover city’ in 3 lakhs to 10 lakh population category. In the same population category, Pilai of Chattisgarh won the best self-sustainable city award.

Cleanest small city award in the 1 lakh to 3 lakh population category went to Chattisgarh’s Ambikapur. Burhanpur of Madhya Pradesh won the award for fastest mover small city.

Cleanest capital city award was won by New Delhi’s New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). Fastest mover capital city award went to Lucknow. Bhopal bagged the award for best self-sustainable capital city.

A total of 129 top performing cities and states were presented the awards by Puri in a virtual programme ‘Swachh Mahotsav’.

The programme was organised by the union ministry of housing and urban affairs. The prime minister who was originally supposed to announce the results, could not attend the event. In the first edition, Mysuru had won the cleanest city award but was dethroned by Indore in the second edition and has continued to occupy the top spot in the category.
