New Delhi, March 30: On the death anniversary (punya tithi) of the nationalist and a revolutionary freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to him on Thursday.
On his Twitter account, PM wrote, “I pay homage to Shyamji Krishna Varma on his Punya Tithi. A devout nationalist and courageous personality, he was at the forefront of India’s struggle against injustice and colonial rule. Inspired by his ideals, we will keep working for the people of our great nation.”
Varma was born in 1857 in Gujarat’s Mandvi area. He completed his graduation from Balliol College and became a noted scholar in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. Not only had he become a lawyer and journalist, but given his significant contribution to India’s freedom fight.
In 1905, he founded the Indian Home Rule Society, India House, and the Indian Sociologist, and with that, he promoted the cause of Indian nationalism and the freedom of the country, which had developed as an important meeting point for the nationalists among the Indian students in Britain.
He had published his first English-language monthly, the Indian Sociologist, and debuted in Indian politics; he had focused all of his activities on political propaganda with the aim of getting complete independence for India.
Back then, in 2003, when Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the Gujarat state, he had brought back the ashes of Shyamji Krishna Varma from Switzerland, where he died in the year 1930.
