New Delhi: Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, accused in the INX Media case, will remain in CBI custody until August 30, a special court said here on Monday.

Tryst with Destiny: Former Finance Minister and Congress leader P. Chidambaram.

Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar remanded the senior Congress leader—dubbed by the Delhi High Court as the “kingpin”—for four more days to the CBI’s custody for further interrogation. He was produced in the special CBI court after expiry of his four-day remand granted on August 22.

The extension of remand came after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor General K N Natarajan, representing the CBI, said the accused was yet to face the facts and some e-mail exchanges. His confrontation with the co-accused was not complete, they added.

Mehta said the Enforcement Director’s investigation into the case was also in progress simultaneously and the CBI has received information about it.

Earlier, in a major setback to the Congress leader, the Supreme Court refused to entertain his plea challenging the dismissal of his anticipatory bail in the case lodged by the CBI. The SC said his petition had become infructuous as he had already been arrested by the probe agency.

Congress leaders and senior counsel Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared on behalf of Chidambaram in the Supreme Court and the Special CBI court, respectively.
