New Delhi: Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated compatriot Ashmita Chaliha in straight games 21-7, 21-18 of the women’s singles India Open 2022 at the KD Jadhav Stadium on Friday, January 14, 2022.
The match began as Sindhu led from the first minute. Her aces and dominant smashes garnered her 11 points against the 21-year old. Sindhu seemed fiercely determined as she went on to gain 10 more points. On the other hand, Chaliha tried creating momentum as she faltered with net points and unforced errors. The set ended with Sindhu winning 21-7.
Chaliha opened the second set with a newfound vigor and equalised scores at 9-9 as Sindhu managed a point by slight advantage in the next minute. Though Sindhu went on to lead 15-11, Chaliha counter-attacked and saved her net. She even equalised scores at 15-15. However, Sindhu changed courts and gained 4 consecutive points in her favour. Chaliha gained 2 points before Sindhu smashed the game shut in 36 minutes with a 21-18 victory.
PV Sindhu will play against Supanida Katethong of Thailand in the India Open 2022 semifinals on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
