NEW DELHI, July 8: About 10 central trade unions have jointly given a call for “Bharat Bandh” on Wednesday to protest against the central government’s alleged “anti-farmer, anti-workers, anti-national and pro-corporate policies.”

The trade union leaders claimed on Tuesday that more than 25 crore workers and farmers would join the nation-wide strike crippling various sectors including mining, postal services and construction activities.

Banking unions have not confirmed joining the strike and disruption of services but the organisers have claimed that the financial services would also be affected. The bandh organizers have claimed that employees in the banking sector would join the bandh.

Schools, colleges, and private offices are expected to remain open but normal operations may be hit in some regions due to transport issues. Public buses, taxis, and app-based cab services could be affected as trade unions and allied groups hold protest marches and road demonstrations in several cities.

The railway employees too have not confirmed joining the bandh but the Railways may also face problems, as in the past, because of disruptions in services in the transport sector.

As far as the rural areas are concerned, farmers in large numbers are expected to participate in the bandh. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha and agricultural workers’ unions have planned to mobilize villagers and protest against economic decisions that they claim are worsening rural distress.
