New Delhi: Eating sugar is not the only reason a person develops diabetes, according to gastroenterologist Dr Palaniappan Manickam, who has explained several common myths about the condition.
Diabetes is a long-term health condition that affects how the body controls blood sugar levels. Misunderstandings about the disease can make it harder for people to manage their health properly.
In a post on Instagram, Dr Manickam explained that people with diabetes do not need to completely avoid fruits. Foods rich in fibre can also help slow the rise in blood sugar after meals.
He clarified that taking medicines does not mean people can ignore their diet. Diabetes can also affect people who are not overweight, while cardio exercise alone cannot guarantee that the condition will be reversed.
The doctor also warned against assuming that jaggery, honey and brown sugar are healthier alternatives for people with diabetes, as they can also increase blood sugar levels.
He further explained that bitter gourd juice cannot cure diabetes. Understanding these facts can help people make informed food choices and manage the condition with appropriate medical care.
