Delhi’s Changing Protest Sites Raise Questions About Public Attention

New Delhi: Delhi has a long history of protests, with people gathering in public places to raise their voices and demand action from the government. Over the years, the locations of these demonstrations have changed due to restrictions and government decisions.

For decades, the Boat Club area near important government buildings was a major protest site. However, rallies were stopped there in 1993, and Jantar Mantar became a popular location for demonstrations. Now, protests are increasingly being moved to areas on the outskirts of Delhi, raising concerns about whether they will receive enough public attention.

During British rule, public gatherings were often restricted, but people continued to organise protests. Old Delhi was an important centre of political activity. Company Bagh, also known as Queen’s Garden, hosted demonstrations during Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt Satyagraha in 1930.

Chandni Chowk Town Hall and the Red Fort also served as important gathering places for political meetings and protests.
