New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday predicted extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh until November 20.

The cyclonic circulation in the low-pressure belt over the South-East and South-West Bay of Bengal will result in heavy moisture-laden winds bringing widespread downpour to the region, it said.

In a statement, IMD said, “A well-marked low-pressure area lies over Southern and West-Central Bay of Bengal, off the North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts, with a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. It is very likely to intensify into a depression during the next 12 hours.”

Tamil Nadu districts like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Ranipet, Atiramapattinam, Kodaikanal, Cuddalore, Karaikal, Tiruchirapalli, Tirupattur, and Palayankottal, and Pondicherry will experience heavy to very heavy rains on Thursday onwards. Intense downpours up to 20.4 cm may continue until November 20.

Coastal and southern Andhra Pradesh and the Rayalaseema region will continue to experience thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated heavy rainfall on November 19 and 20.

The North-East and retreating monsoon winds brought sufficient rainfall in the state that received 45 cm downpour instead of an average of 29 cm this year. Chennai too recorded excessive rainfall of 82 cm instead of 50 cm since October 01.
