3 Earthquakes Jolt Chandigarh, J & K, Andaman and Nicobar

New Delhi: According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), three earthquakes jolted parts of Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. The NCS shared seismographs on Twitter, highlighting the affected areas.

Informing about the tremblor in Chandigarh, the NCS tweeted, “Earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred on March 16, 2022, 03:09 PM IST on latitude 24.25 and longitude 82.58 with a depth of 15 km located 138 km North-Northwest (NNW) of Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, India.”

Another earthquake jolted the Leh district of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, on March 16, 2022. “Earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred on March 16, 2022, 11:40 AM IST on latitude 36.23 and longitude 78.50 with a depth of 80 km located 245 km North-Northeast (NNE) of Leh, Ladakh, India,” the NCS tweeted.

The Union Territory experienced six major earthquakes in February 2022.

Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the early hours of Wednesday.

The NCS shared the details in a caption that read, “Earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred on March 16, 2022, 03:17 AM IST on latitude 14.70 and longitude 93.15 with a depth of 10 km located 160 km North of Diglipur, Andaman and Nicobar islands, India.”

It is the second tremblor in Andaman and Nicobar Islands this month. A 5.1 magnitude earthquake had struck Campbell Bay on March 10, 2022.

No reports of losses or damage to property have surfaced so far.
