V-P Radhakrishnan, Zanzibar President Mwinyi review India-Tanzania ties, discuss cooperation in blue economy, technology
New Delhi: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Monday reviewed the full spectrum of India-Tanzania relations and discussed expanding cooperation in sectors including the blue economy, tourism, technology, health and education.
Mwinyi, who was on a four-day official visit to India from July 17 to 20, held bilateral talks with the Vice-President. The two leaders also took stock of growing trade, investment and development cooperation between the two countries, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
During the meeting, Mwinyi invited V-P Radhakrishnan to pay an official visit to Tanzania, an invitation the Vice-President accepted.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the visiting leader. Their discussions focused on the India-Tanzania development partnership, including the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus, which has emerged as a key education initiative in Africa.
The MEA said Mwinyi appreciated India’s support in establishing IIT Madras Zanzibar, as well as its assistance in Tanzania’s water infrastructure projects and human resource development.
Earlier, the Zanzibar President attended the 63rd convocation of IIT Madras as the chief guest. During the visit, he toured the institute’s laboratories, Research Park and Startup Incubation Cell, and interacted with faculty members and students.
He also unveiled the master plan for the permanent campus of IIT Madras Zanzibar, which marks two years since its establishment in October 2023.
The visit builds on Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s state visit to India in October 2023, when the two countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership.
The MEA said Mwinyi’s visit had given fresh momentum to India-Tanzania ties and strengthened cooperation with Zanzibar in economic, technological and educational sectors.
