New Delhi: The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) launched a new global education mascot, Uni. The mascot will act as an ambassador for learning and will symbolize every child’s right to quality education.

The Uni mascot is a full-body six-foot tall blue colour bag made of comfort foam that highlights the importance of quality education and draws attention to global learning crisis.

Nearly 70 percent of children belonging to lower and middle-income countries are deprived of the basic ability to read and understand simple written stories. According to the organisation, the Uni macot, therefore, will address this state of education to the fore and inspire actions to help improve it.

Talking about the mascot, UNICEF Global Director of Communication and Advocacy, Paloma Escudero said, “Uni embodies our aspiration that every child has the right to go to school and learn. Every child has a right not only to be in school but to learn in school, acquiring the basic skills that are the foundation for higher learning and higher income levels someday.”

The United Nations will hold the Transforming Education Summit in New York on September 16-17 and September 19, 2022. The Summit will be held to talk about the global crisis in education, particularly regarding factors including inclusion, equity, quality, and relevance.

“The crisis is often slow and unseen but is taking a toll on the future of children and the youth around the world,” the UN official statement read.
