New Delhi, May 2: Spanish star and the world number 3 Carlos Alcaraz’s hope to win his third consecutive Madrid Open was shattered when he lost to Russian player and world number 8 Andrey Rublev on Wednesday, the media reported.

After losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Rublev, Alcaraz said exhaustion was the main reason for his bad results.

“Today probably I felt more pain in the forearm than yesterday’s match. I knew I was going to feel something or I’m going to think about it even more.”

Had he won, Alcaraz would have become the first player to win three consecutive Madrid Open Single titles in history. Rublev will now face American Taylor Fritz, who is world no 13.

Just a few minutes after Alcaraz was knocked out by Rublev, the world number 2 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the tournament due to a hip injury he suffered while playing with Felix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday.
