New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to 12th-century philosopher and social reformer Jagadguru Basaveshwara on the occasion of Basava Jayanthi.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “On the special occasion of Basava Jayanthi, paying homage to Jagadguru Basaveshwara and his enduring teachings. His vision of a just society, along with his unwavering efforts to empower the people, will always motivate us.”

Basaveshwara, popularly known as Basavanna, is regarded as a leading figure of the 12th-century Bhakti movement associated with devotion to Lord Shiva. His teachings, expressed through poetic verses called Vachanas, focused on equality, justice and spiritual devotion.

He strongly opposed caste hierarchies, gender inequality and ritualistic traditions, instead promoting a society based on equality and inclusiveness.

Basavanna also popularised the practice of wearing the Ishtalinga, representing a personal and direct bond with the divine beyond social divisions.

He also founded the Anubhava Mantapa, considered one of the earliest platforms for open dialogue, where individuals from varied backgrounds, including women, engaged in discussions on social and spiritual matters.

Remembered as a champion of equality, he is also considered to be a great social reformer who stood for the rights of the underprivileged classes and women.
