New Delhi: The Mahindra Consulting Engineers Ltd has signed a consultancy contract for the design and construction supervision of the Indian Economic Zone (EZ) in Bangladesh.

The Indian company and the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) signed the deal for the EZ in Mirsharai, being built under the third Government of India’s Line of Credit of USD 4.5 billion, extended to the neighboring country, officials said.

India had signed an MoU with BEZA to invest in two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Kushtia and Mongla. The Kushtia EZ in Mirsharai will be the second-largest Bangladesh Government to Government (G2G), Economic Zone, after the Japanese EZ outside of Dhaka City, in Arihajar Upazila of Narayanganj District.

China is the third country to invest in and run the Chattagram’s Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Anwara.

Early this month, the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) had inked a similar deal with BEZA to develop the essential infrastructure for the Indian EZ Bangladesh. On behalf of New Delhi, the APSEZ will act as the EZ implementation agency.

The Indian EZ is in the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) subzone-19, barely 10 km from the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway and 65 km from Chattogram.

India is also committed to developing another G2G economic zone for Indian enterprises at Mongla, and the flagship development project at BSMSN with a total commitment of USD 293 million.
