New Delhi: India and the Maldives on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to augment marine safety, security, and environmental protection in the region through cooperation in the Long-Range Identification and Tracking of Ships (LRIT) system.

Sunjay Sudhir, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, and Aishath Nahula, Maldives’ Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, signed the MoU.

With the signing of the MoU, Maldives will be able to use the Indian LRIT – National Data Centre (NDC) and its facilities, allowing it to meet its LRIT obligations as a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) without having to operate a separate NDC.
