India Exports First Consignment of Organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria

Gobichettipalayam (Tamil Nadu): India has exported its first consignment of organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria, marking a step towards expanding international markets for the country’s traditional agricultural products.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated the flag-off of the 1.755-tonne consignment from Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district to Varna, Bulgaria, on October 15.

The product is certified under India’s National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and European Union organic standards. The consignment will be shipped by sea through Chennai Port.

Manufactured and exported by Wellbeing Foods, Erode, in collaboration with Chetty Exports Private Limited, Chennai, the shipment will be imported and distributed in Bulgaria by Sow Life Ltd.

Boost to farmers and organic exports

The initiative aims to strengthen market linkages for Tamil Nadu’s traditional Palmyra-based products and create new opportunities for producers engaged in organic cultivation.

According to the press release, the initiative covers 137 acres under organic cultivation and is expected to benefit farmers through improved market access and export-oriented value chains.

The reported price realisation is approximately 15–22 per cent higher for farmers and 17 per cent higher for the manufacturer compared with the domestic market, offering potential for improved returns and more sustainable livelihoods.

Palmyra Jaggery Powder is derived from the nectar of Palmyra palm blossoms. The traditional sweetener has potential for value addition and wider acceptance in international markets as an alternative to refined sugar.

Palmyra-based products are closely associated with Tamil Nadu’s agricultural and cultural heritage. Expanding exports of such products could create additional market opportunities for producers and other participants across the supply chain.

APEDA facilitates export development

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev flagged off the consignment. APEDA Secretary Saswati Bose, senior officials, representatives of the exporting companies, international partners, progressive rice farmers and other stakeholders associated with the export value chain were also present.

APEDA continues to facilitate exports of certified organic and value-added agricultural products by supporting market development, quality compliance and connections between Indian producers and overseas buyers.

The maiden shipment to Bulgaria is expected to open avenues for further market expansion and strengthen the presence of India’s traditional agricultural products in international markets.
