New Delhi: Hindi Diwas is celebrated annually on September 14 to commemorate the adoption of the Hindi language as the country’s official language by the Indian Constituent Assembly on this day in the year 1949. Hindi is the third highest spoken language globally, with over 65 crore speakers worldwide.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his followers and said that the Hindi language has brought India special honor on a global platform and that its simplicity and sensitivity always attracts people.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the PM said, “Hindi has brought a special honor to India all over the world. Its simplicity, spontaneity and sensitivity always attracts. On Hindi Diwas, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all those people who have contributed tirelessly in making it prosperous and empowered.”
Indian Congress Minister, Shashi Tharoor, posted an old video on the occasion which showed him remarking how the Hindi language has become a necessity in the politics. He went on to say that anyone can speak the Hindi language today, adding that South Indians too can converse in the Hindi language.
The Congress leader’s statement was in response to a question of whether the Congress party President should be a Hindi speaking individual.
The central government has issued an order for the formation of a Town Official Language Implementation Committee in each country where India has more than seven central government offices, undertakings, or Indian bank branches.
Home Minister Amit Shah stressed on the importance of the Hindi language by calling it our official language and said that the language does not only unite the nation, but is also being used in foreign countries.
“We have developed the LILA Hindi Pravah application for easy learning and e-Mahashabdkosh is also available. The department is also working to develop a comprehensive Hindi dictionary,” Shah added.
“Rajbhasha Hindi unites the nation in the thread of unity. Hindi is the friend of all Indian languages. The Modi government is committed towards parallel development of all local languages including Hindi. I salute the great personalities who have contributed in the preservation and promotion of Hindi. Happy ‘Hindi Divas’ to all,” Shah tweeted on Wednesday.
The day also marks the birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha, who played a crucial role in getting Hindi in Devanagari script approved as an official language of India. He was born on September 14, 1916.
