Gujarat: Bhagavad Gita to be taught to students from classes 6 to 12
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani has announced that Bhagavad Gita, the holy epic has been made compulsory in all Gujarat Schools. Bhagavad Gita will be taught to students from classes 6 to 12.
According to a media report, the idea behind making Bhagavad Gita a compulsory part of the school curriculum is to foster ‘Indian culture and knowledge system.’ This step is expected to be implemented in Gujarat Schools from the upcoming academic year, 2022-23.
The introduction of Bhagavad Gita in Gujarat Schools is not the first time when a holy text has been introduced in the school curriculum. Before this, in Madhya Pradesh, epics of Ramayana, Mahabharata were made a part of the Engineering education syllabus under National Education Policy, NEP 2020.
Education Minister Vaghani has said that the introduction of the Bhagavad Gita will be done in parts. For classes 6 to 8, this holy text will be introduced in the form of a story and recitation in textbooks. For classes 9 to 12, it would be introduced in the form of a story and recitation in the first language textbook.
