Climate change, deforestation, global warming, pollution – these are the words that have become part of our daily conversations. But such topics should not just remain part of conversations, it is time for everyone to be informed about our natural surroundings, understand how our actions affect the well-being of our local and global environments. That is exactly what Greenmosphere initiative has been working towards. Launched in 2021 by Adani Total Gas Limited, a joint venture between the Adani Group and Total Energies, this green corporate movement targets afforestation, outreach to millennials, and creating a platform for spreading awareness on energy conservation for our community circle.

When it comes to raising awareness about environmental issues, a good place to start is at school where students, the future of this world, can learn something from the eco initiatives, which has been wonderfully tapped via Greenmosphere. Through their Green Millennials platform, the initiative spread awareness among millennials across all schools and colleges. The awareness runs through a structured program based on green technology, energy efficiency and conservation with deep empathy for sustainable living. Under the Greenmosphere Project, ATGL has partnered with CERC (Consumer Education and Research Centre) and launched an ATGL Greenmosphere Students’ Club for students of 30 selected schools with an engagement of 4250+ students. The value and belief system for a better future starts and generates as an heirloom in the form of educating and implanting the seed of optimal techniques and thoughts of environmentally conscious choices, along with engaging activities through which they will learn and develop towards a greener future.

To further this message, the Green Millennials Achievers Awards has been constituted recently, which is an interschool competition for the Greenmosphere Students’ Club of these schools. The nominations have been accepted in categories such as story writing, comic book creation, presentation, animation, poetry writing, slogan writing, working model to show different forms of energy, drawing, poster making, solo dance, group dance and skit, solo act. The awards ceremony, which will declare awards in 13 categories, is slated to be held in April.

As part of the initiative, Greenmosphere has also been developing a Biodiversity Park at Gota in Ahmedabad in collaboration with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Spread across an area of 36,200 square meter, the park, whose foundation stone was laid in March 2022 on the World Forest Day, uses the Miyawaki methodology to help grow self-sustaining dense forests whereby two to four trees are planted in each square meter. The forest area will help lower temperatures, reduce air and noise pollution, become a habitat for birds and insects. It will also act as a carbon sink. Besides attracting a variety of birds, the park also provides an ideal ecosystem for aquatic animals.

This project is aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The overall project will see a healthy participation of women with 1:1 male/female employee ratio. This is aligned with SDG 5 which calls on to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The nature of business where ATGL is engaged, is about ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all, which makes it compliant with SDG 7. The entire park is designed by innovative solutions of reusing waste materials in collaboration with students of Unitedworld Institute of Design (UID) – Karnavati University). The park has adopted permaculture technique that eliminates use of any chemicals or inorganic nutrients and improves soil and plant health by natural composting of fallen plant parts like leaves, twigs, fruits, seeds etc. The benches, pathway and other installations will be an iconic design made from waste or recycled material, making the project aligned to SDG 12, which is about Sustainable Consumption and Production Pattern.

Additionally, 1,536 metric tonnes of oxygen generated per annum because of the 2.5 lakh trees is aligned with SDG 13 which seeks urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

The facilities at the Park include Natural forest walkway, Birds attracting trees, Yoga Lawn near water feature, Natural waterfall and waterbody, Rest area, Natural contour like mound, hilly land features, Natural Amphitheatre, Butterfly garden, Herbs garden, Medicinal/Indigenous plants and Public amenities. Gota’s Biodiversity Park is set to attract people from all walks of life, including local residents, senior citizens, students, educators, environmentalists, thinkers and go a long way in fulfilling SDG 15, which envisages communities to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
