New Delhi: The government of India will be setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a part of the India-UAE trade deal that was signed on February 18. The deal was signed during the virtual summit meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

This will be the first time an IIT would be established outside of the country. India currently has 23 IITs, which are considered to be premiere institutes and offer a range of degrees starting from BTech to doctoral programs. The top IITs in India are IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras.

India and UAE signed the historic Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at boosting the merchandise trade between the two countries to USD 100 billion over the next five years.

The partnership between the two countries has led to the joint work on several agreements and Memorandum of Understanding in several areas, including the Economy, Climate Change and Houbara Conservation, Industries and Advanced Technologies, Low Carbon Hydrogen Developments and Investments, Food Security, Financial Services, and Education cooperation.

Both India and the UAE have also agreed to support each other’s clean energy missions and set up a joint hydrogen task force to scale up technologies, primarily that of producing green hydrogen.
