Cycling: Recovering, Belgian cyclist Waut Van Aert withdraws from Giro d’Italia
New Delhi, April 12: Belgian cyclist Waut Van Aert will not compete at the 2024 Giro d’Italia as he is yet to fully recover from injuries. Waut had suffered from collarbone and several rib injuries during the Dwars door Vlaanderen race in Belgium last month.
In a video message on Thursday, he said he is trying to recover, so he can’t compete in this year’s Giro d’Italia. “My ribs are still a limiting factor. At this point, I cannot train at all. That’s why we decided to not start at Giro d’Italia.”
French cyclist Christophe Laporte will replace Waut at the Giro d’Italia, scheduled to be held in Turin, Italy, from May 4, 2024. Due to injuries, the nine-time Tour de France stage winner Waut Van Aert had also withdrawn from the tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix classics, and the Amsterdam gold race.
