New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed relief that US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were safe following a shooting incident during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening (local time) at the Washington Hilton, where suspected gunshots were reported in the hotel lobby, prompting immediate evacuation of the US President and other senior officials.

Swift Evacuation Amid Security Scare

According to officials, tactical teams quickly secured the venue and escorted the President, Vice President, and other attendees to a safe location. Law enforcement agencies and DC police responded swiftly, bringing the situation under control.

In a post on X, Modi condemned the attack, stating that “violence has no place in a democracy,” and extended his best wishes for the safety and well-being of those present at the event.

Trump Praises Security Response

Following the incident, President Trump commended security personnel for their rapid response and confirmed that the suspect—reportedly a resident of California—had been subdued.

While addressing the media, Trump also referred to previous assassination attempts against him in Pennsylvania and Florida, highlighting what he described as ongoing threats to national leadership.

Push for Enhanced Security Infrastructure

The US President used the episode to underline the need for stronger security arrangements at high-profile venues. He reiterated plans for a new ballroom at the White House, which he said would feature advanced security measures, including bulletproof glass and enhanced protection systems.

Trump noted that such infrastructure is being advocated by security agencies, including the Secret Service and military, to ensure safer environments for official events.
