India Voices Concern Over Lebanon Strikes, Stresses Civilian Protection
New Delhi, 11 April 2026: On Friday, India said that it had always been committed to investing in the peace, security, and stability of Lebanon and expressed great concern about the ongoing attacks from Israel, emphasizing that civilian protection is a top priority.
In response to the changing dynamics in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said New Delhi was carefully observing the developments in the region.
MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said the situation in Lebanon was “very disturbing” and pointed out that India is a troop contributor to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), contributing to the maintenance of peace and security in Lebanon.
“We are deeply concerned by reports of a large number of civilian casualties that have been reported in Lebanon. As a troop-contributing country to United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)–which is invested in Lebanon’s peace and security–the trajectory of events is very disturbing,” Jaiswal said.
It was also noted that India was keeping close tabs on the current events, especially considering that about 1,000 Indians live in the nation.
The statement comes at a time when the tension levels between Israel and the militant forces based in Lebanon have risen dramatically, resulting in the likelihood of a regional war breaking out and leading to deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
Israeli strikes on the residents of Lebanon have intensified, resulting in a significant number of civilian deaths and widespread destruction. Reports suggest that recent attacks have killed hundreds and caused extensive damage to residential areas, raising global concern over the humanitarian situation.
India, while not directly naming Israel, urged restraint and compliance with international laws, stressing the importance of respecting sovereignty and protecting civilians amidst any armed conflict.
The MEA made it clear that all sides should refrain from escalating the situation to restoring peace within the region.
The current conflict is unfolding amid an existing ceasefire mechanism linked to broader tensions involving the U.S. and Iran.
Israel has maintained that its operations targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon will continue even as international actors push for de-escalation.
“I wish to inform you: There is no ceasefire in Lebanon. We are continuing to strike Hezbollah with full force, and we will not stop until we restore your security,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
In the meantime, the humanitarian toll continues to mount, with reports of displacement and strained health facilities due to incessant attacks.
The escalating situation has created worries for nations with stakes in the region, like India, which has always maintained its position for peaceful negotiations in West Asia.
These recent remarks from India indicates its commitment and involvement in diplomacy, considering the rising tensions posed by the ongoing war in Lebanon.
