New Delhi: Russia welcomes China’s proposition to enlarge the alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, known as BRICS, but believes it is too early to name new possible members, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

China, which is presiding over BRICS this year, “has suggested we step up this effort, and we support this initiative,” Zakharova told a news briefing.

“The problem is not that simple” though, the diplomat added. “A consensus on standards and criteria, and the entry procedure” needs to be achieved within BRICS, Zakharova noted, adding that it was too early to divulge any details.

Nevertheless, China and Russia currently enjoy the best relations they have had since the late 1950s. Although they have no formal alliance, the two countries do have an informal agreement to coordinate diplomatic and economic moves and build up an alliance against the United States.

According to a media report, Alongside the specific concern about the China-Russia relationship is a sense that China is a world superpower. About two-thirds (66%) of U.S. adults say China’s influence on the world stage has grown stronger in recent years. More Americans now also describe China as the world’s leading economic power. Around four-in-ten (43%) call China the world’s top economy – as many as say the same as the U.S. This marks a significant departure from 2020 when 32% of Americans said China was the world’s top economy and 52% named the US.
