New Delhi: US President Joe Biden on Monday announced his intention to nominate Bridget Brink as US ambassador to Ukraine, the White House said in a statement.

“Today, President Biden announced his intention to nominate veteran US diplomat Bridget Brink to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine,” the statement published on the White House website reads.

Brink currently heads the US diplomatic mission in Slovakia. The US envoy’s post in Kyiv has been vacant since May 2019, when Marie Jovanovitch, the then ambassador to Ukraine, was removed by Donald Trump, who was the president of the United States at that time, on accusations of her disloyalty.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbas republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to protect people “who have been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kyiv regime for eight years.” The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories. Following this, the US, the EU, the UK, and a number of other countries announced the introduction of sanctions against Russian legal entities and private individuals.
