World Water Day 2023: “accelerating the chance to solve the water and sanitation crises”

New Delhi, March 22: World Water Day, which is observed every year on March 22, aims to highlight the importance of water and raise awareness about the water crises around the globe. This year, too, the day is celebrated with the theme of “accelerating the chance to solve the water and sanitation crises.”

The theme itself implies the requirement to take action towards the growing crisis of water in the world and make innovations related to water-related sustainable development goals.

In the year 1992, during the United Nations conference on environment and development at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the members talked about water issues, and then the idea of the World Water Day was introduced for the first time. After that, in the same year, the General Assembly enacted the resolution declaring March 22 as World Water Day, which started the next year, in 1993.

As per the UN, there are millions of people, billions of people, including schools, businesses, farms, health care centers, and hospitals, who are having a problem because they lack access to safe, fresh, water and sanitation facilities. Therefore, it is very important to address such crises and take actions to change the major issues.

The primary purpose of celebrating World Water Day is to celebrate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to provide clean water and sanitation to everyone by 2030, with the objective of encouraging people to take individual action towards the fresh water resources’ sustainability as per their capacity.
