US Open: Carlos Alcaraz beats Peter Gojowczyk 3-2, enters quarterfinals
New Delhi: Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz beat German Peter Gojowczyk by 3-2 on Monday to enter the US Open quarterfinals at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York.
The 5-set match opened with Carlos giving a tough fight to Peter but the latter won the first set by 5-7. Then Carlos stepped up his game to win the second set by 6-1. Peter tactfully diverted the match into a deuce and won the third set by 5-7.
In the fourth and fifth sets, however, Carlos aggressively charged at Peter with his aces and backhands to win 6-2 and 6-0, consecutively.
The World No. 55 will face Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in the quarterfinals.
Carlos became the youngest tennis player to enter the Men’s Grand Slam Singles quarterfinals since Michael Chang in 1990, the youngest male US Open quarterfinalist since 1963, and the youngest Men’s Singles player to reach the fourth round of the US Open in 32 years.
