UPI now live in Greece as India’s digital payment ecosystem expands globally: Piyush Goyal
New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now live in Greece, enabling eligible customers to make instant, secure and seamless money transfers at significantly lower transaction costs than conventional payment methods.
The growing global adoption of UPI reflects confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing technology-driven solutions that create value beyond national borders and strengthen international partnerships, Goyal said in a post on X.
During his visit to Greece, the minister met Eurobank Chief Executive Officer Fokion Karavias to discuss ways to deepen the India-Greece economic partnership.
“We encouraged Greek businesses to invest in India and explored avenues for collaboration in manufacturing and infrastructure development in Greece, advancing our shared vision for growth and prosperity,” Goyal said.
The minister also witnessed a live demonstration of the Eurobank-NIPL partnership at Eurobank’s headquarters in Athens. The initiative enables UPI services through Eurobank and marks another milestone in the global expansion of India’s digital payments ecosystem. The demonstration was attended by Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait.
Earlier, Goyal addressed the India-Greece Business Forum alongside Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Theoharis, where he also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora.
Highlighting India’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals and sustained economic growth, Goyal said the country offers significant opportunities for Greek businesses and investors.
He also emphasised the potential of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to unlock new opportunities for trade, investment and economic cooperation.
According to the minister, discussions also focused on expanding collaboration across key sectors, with an emphasis on encouraging businesses to co-create, co-invest and co-manufacture with India to strengthen bilateral economic ties and promote shared prosperity.
