Tremblor: Earthquake Measuring 3.2 Jolts Tezpur district of Assam
New Delhi: The Tezpur district of Assam experienced a mild earthquake of 3.2 intensity on the Richter Scale on Thursday, January 6, 2022. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) shared a seismograph on Twitter that highlighted the affected areas.
“An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 occurred on January 6, 2022, around 4:46 pm on the latitude of 26.60 and longitude 92.37, with a depth of 10km located 42km West of Tezpur, Assam, India,” the NCS had tweeted.
The earthquake was witnessed a day after a 3.7 intensity earthquake jolted the Ravangla district of Sikkim. There are no reports of damage or casualties so far.
Geologists believe that the Kopili Fault Zone is the primary reason for the frequent tremblors in the seismically active region.
The Kopili Fault Zone is a 300km long and 50 km wide lineament that lies closer to the Himalayan Frontal Thrust. It runs from the western border of Manipur and connects Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam, thereby creating a tri-junction.
The fault creates a transpressional fracture that leads to frequent lower crustal dextral strike-slip earthquakes in the Seismic Hazard Zone V.
