New Delhi: Thursday became a red-letter day in Indian sports history when, after a 41-year-hiatus, the men’s hockey team redeemed national honor by winning a Bronze, while Ravi Dahiya won a Silver in wrestling.

With these, India has so far won three Bronze and two Silver Medals at the ongoing Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Earlier, Mirabai Chanu had won India’s first Silver in weightlifting in the Tokyo Games, while PV Sindhu and Lovlina Borgohain won bronze in badminton and boxing, respectively.

On Thursday, Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya won a Silver after losing the final of the men’s freestyle 57 kg weight class contest to two-time world champion Zavur Uguev of Russia. Uguev won the thrilling contest 7-4.

With this, Dahiya, who hails from a wrestling family in Haryana’s Nahari, helped India win its fifth medal in Tokyo. He was mentored by two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar at Delhi’s Chhatrasal academy. There, he stayed in the same room which was once home to London Games bronze winner Yogeshwar Dutt.

Deepak Punia lost to San Marino’s M N Amine in the bronze medal contest in the men’s freestyle category.
