New Delhi: The 94th Academy Awards declared nominations on Tuesday, February 08, 2022, and generated positive news for the Indian cinema.

An Indian film, Writing With Fire, that is directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, is nominated for the Best Documentary Feature. The film was nominated alongside Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Summer of Soul

Writing With Fire is a film regarding the transition of journalists behind the Dalit women-led newspaper, Khabar Lahariya, from 14 years of print to digital journalism via smartphones.

The film made its debut at the Sundance film festival, where it won two awards: The Audience Award and Special Jury Award: Impact for Change in the World Cinema Documentary category. It has bagged 20 awards since then. The film was scheduled for a January 31, 2021, release at the Sundance Film Festival.

The reviews of the film have been commendable. The Washington Post referred to it as “The most inspiring journalism movie – maybe ever.”

The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre, USA, to honour the best films, performances, and behind-the-scenes movie magic of the year.

The film is the first Indian feature documentary to be nominated for an Academy Award.
