Seven Killed, 34 Injured in Gun Attack at Church Funeral in Jordan

Karak (Jordan): At least seven people were killed and 34 others injured after gunmen opened fire during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan’s Karak region, Al Jazeera reported.

The attack took place in the village of Hamoud, triggering widespread condemnation from Jordanian authorities and international leaders.

King Abdullah II of Jordan expressed grief over the incident and vowed a strong response against those responsible. He stressed that the attack would not undermine national unity, asserting that Jordanians remained united in the face of violence.

In a statement, the King offered condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He also warned that those threatening the country’s security would face a firm response.

International Leaders Condemn Attack

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the shooting, describing it as an act of terror targeting mourners at a place of worship. He extended condolences to the bereaved families, the injured and the Greek Orthodox community.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also strongly condemned the attack, stressing that places of worship must remain safe spaces for all.

Guterres said attacks against civilians and places of worship were unacceptable and expressed solidarity with the people and government of Jordan.
