New Delhi: After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 forced millions to flee the war-torn country, many people and organizations have come out to provide succor in various ways to the Ukrainian refugees.

One of them is a group of volunteers in Manitoba, Canada, who have collected around USD 3,000 as a perogy fundraiser for those who fled Ukraine.

Monisha Shah, who hails from Ahmedabad, India, is also part of these volunteers. Working regularly with refugees and newcomers, she said she felt motivated to help make perogies to benefit refugees displaced from Ukraine.

“I feel like I’m contributing as much as I can and not just with resources, but also with my time. So it makes me feel like I’m doing something about it,” she added.

Last week, they made and sold perogies, and collected donations and goods at the Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Center to support Ukrainian refugees in Poland, particularly women, girls, LGBTQ people, and other minority groups at risk.

Women for Peace Research, a think tank, organized the fundraising. Its Director, Tara Sheppard-Luangkhot, said her paternal grandparents came from Ukraine. All the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Ukrainian refugees.

She plans to travel to Poland next month to offer her support to the refugees, bringing with her refugee care kits she’s assembling with other volunteers.
