Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended his congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea (ROK), expressing his commitment to further strengthening the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Congratulations to Mr Lee Jae-myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea. Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.”

Lee Jae-myung, South Korea’s centre-left candidate, was officially declared president on Wednesday following a snap election triggered by the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Lee’s victory ushers in a new chapter for a nation grappling with political turmoil and the aftermath of a controversial attempt to impose martial law.

Lee secured 49.4% of the vote, decisively defeating his conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, who received 41.2%.

Kim’s campaign was hindered by internal party conflicts and the presence of a third-party candidate, which split the right-wing vote. Given the snap nature of the election, Lee’s presidential term began immediately after the National Election Commission certified the results.
