Modi Pays Homage to Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs
NEW DELHI, Apr 13: The prime minister Narendra Modi on paid tributes to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre on the occasion of 104th anniversary of one of the most horrific incidents in the history of India’s freedom movement.
“I recall the sacrifices of all those martyred on this day in Jallianwala Bagh. Their great sacrifice inspires us to work even harder to fulfill the dream of our great freedom fighters and build a strong and developed India,” Modi tweeted.
On this day in 1919, hundreds of unarmed people were killed by the British soldiers when they had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar for a peaceful protest. The British army under the command of General Dyer opened fire on the peaceful protesters. Many fell victim to the bullets while many others got killed when they jumped into a dry well in the Bagh to escape from the bullets. The exact number of dead is still not known, though the then British government had admitted the casualty figure around 500.
Besides the prime minister, many other programmes were also organised on the day to pay tributes to the Jallianwala Bagh martyrs.
