Mawsynram records highest daily rainfall in June since 1940: IMD
New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) released data regarding the highest rainfall in the country. According to the data, Mawsynram recorded the highest daily rainfall of 1003.6mm in June since the year 1940.
The IMD took to twitter to share the rain graph of Mawsynram for the year 2022. The department also said that Cherrapunji still held the record for receiving the highest daily rainfall. Cherrapunji held the record for receiving 1563.3mm since June 16, 1995.
“Mawsynram got 1003.6mm rainfall in 24 hours ending at 0830 hrs IST, June 17, 2022. Region shows Cherrapunji still holds record of highest daily rainfall of 1563.3mm, June 16, 1995. Past data shows today Mawsynram recorded highest daily rain for June in last 83-years since 1940,” IMD tweeted.
Meanwhile, it also predicted rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning with gusty winds over the states of Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal over the next five days.
“Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during next 5 days. Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Jharkhand during next 5 days; Bihar during 17th-20th; Odisha on June 17 and June 20, 2022,” the IMD added.
