NEW DELHI, Mar 14: The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suffered a major injury on her forehead on Thursday evening and was admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress said.

“Our chairperson @MamataOfficial sustained a major injury. Please keep her in your prayers,” the All India Trinamool Congress posted on X and shared photos of Ms Banerjee on a hospital bed with a deep cut in the middle of her forehead and blood on her face.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Ms Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee got her admitted to the hospital, according to party sources. Hospital sources said the forehead cut had been stitched and other necessary treatment was provided to her. She regained consciousness and also spoke to the doctors, the sources said.

TMC sources said the party chief had returned to her Harish Chatterjee street residence from an event when she slipped. “She was walking in her drawing room when she suddenly slipped and fell down, and her head hit a glass showcase. This led to a deep cut on her forehead and profuse bleeding,” a senior TMC leader said. Her nephew Abhishek Banerjee was also present in the house when the accident took place.

“Wishing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee a speedy recovery. Our prayers are with her for a quick return to good health,” Sukanta Majumdar, state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar posted on X.

Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar, a former governor of West Bengal, inquired about the health of the Chief Minister expressing his deep anguish and wishing a speedy recovery.

Prior to the accident, Mamata had gone to Gariahat at Ekdalia Evergreen club to inaugurate an idol of former minister Subrata Mukherjee.

This is the second time this year that Ms Banerjee sustained accidental injuries. She had escaped with minor injuries after a car accident was averted during her tour of East Burdwan on January 24. According to police sources, Banerjee was returning to Kolkata after presiding over an administrative meeting in Burdwan. Near the Burdwan city, her convoy encountered what she claimed was a car speeding at 200 kmph. Banerjee’s driver applied the brakes but her head hit the dashboard, leading to swelling and concussion, she said.
