Ahmedabad: James Michael Tyler succumbed to prostate cancer and passed away in his Los Angeles home on Monday. He was 59 years old.
Confirming the news of his demise, Tyler’s manager Toni Benson said in a statement, “The world knew him as Gunther, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband. Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would usually find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once, you made a friend for life.”
Though Tyler acted in various television programs like Scrubs, Just Shoot Me!, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Modern Music, he achieved fame from Friends sitcom that made him a household name overnight.
He played the character of Gunther, a shy and eccentric manager of the Central Perk in Friends, who was also Rachael’s (Jennifer Aniston) one-sided lover.
Though Tyler was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018, he continued to perform while undergoing treatment.
