New Delhi: The government of India is sending one million doses of the Covaxin vaccine to Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban has takeover the country. The first shipment consisting of 5 lakh doses of Covaxin has been sent through Mahan (Iran) airways and would reach Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Saturday. says a media report.

The situation in the health sector of Afghanistan is very-poor nowadays, and thousands of people are at risk of extreme poverty. Several people are trying to migrate to other countries as the Taliban has come to the authority in the country.

The second shipment comprised another five lakh doses – which will send to Afghanistan by the second week of January-2022. The Covaxin doses are being sent to Afghanistan under the government’s Vaccine Maitri program – a diplomatic move to gift and supply made-in-India vaccines to low-income and developing countries across the globe.

A covaxin vaccine is developed indigenously by Bharat Biotech company. Pharma Company Bharat Biotech is producing 70 million doses per month and planning to boost production to one billion by the upcoming few months. The company has been scaling up its manufacturing capacity across its’ facilities in Hyderabad, Ankleshwar, Pune, and Malur.
