Health: Eighth Yoga Day observed in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh also
New Delhi: Along with India, its neighboring countries Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan also celebrated the Eighth International Yoga Day on Tuesday.
In Colombo, the Indian High Commission and its cultural arm, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, hosted a mega-event to celebrate the day at the capital’s landmark Independence Square.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other dignitaries also attended the event. President Gotabaya Rajapakse, in a message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, described yoga as an invaluable ancient Indian tradition for physical, social, and mental well-being.
In the Nepali capital, Kathmandu, the Indian Embassy organized Yoga Day in the presence of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. He said practicing yoga provides positive energy to the body and mind, and we should incorporate it into our everyday routine.
In Bangladesh, the Indian High Commission organized the program at the Shaheed Suhrawardy National Stadium in Dhaka. Over 1,000 people attended it.
The Indian Embassy in the Bhutanese capital Thimphu celebrated the event at Clock Tower Square.
Since 2015, many countries have been celebrating June 21 every year as the International Day of Yoga, following passaging an Indian resolution co-sponsored by 177 member states at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.
